My Struggle with Sebaceous Hyperplasia
My struggle with Sebaceous Hyperplasia began when I turned 30 years old. I started to notice small, fleshy bumps on my face that I thought was acne. Sebaceous hyperplasia typically begins to appear in young adulthood, often between the ages of 20 and 30. It can also occur in children or older adults but is more common in people aged 20-40. Factors that may increase your risk of
developing sebaceous hyperplasia include being male, having oily skin, using certain medications (e.g., corticosteroids), and a family history of the condition.
But what is sebaceous hyperplasia? Sebaceous hyperplasia is a common skin condition characterized by small, harmless growths called papules that form on the surface of the skin. These growths are caused by an overgrowth of the sebaceous oil-producing glands found
within hair follicles. They often appear as tiny, white or yellow bumps, usually on the face and upper chest. Sebaceous hyperplasia is generally benign and non-cancerous; however, if you’re concerned about their appearance or they become inflamed or painful, consult a dermatologist for proper evaluation and treatment options.
After learning that sebaceous hyperplasia has no cure, I learned how to minimize their appearance and follow these simple steps to combat them:
1. Maintain good hygiene by gently cleansing face twice daily with a mild cleanser.
2. Avoid harsh soaps or detergents that can irritate the skin and worsen sebaceous hyperplasia.
3. Use non-comedogenic skincare products, as they’re less likely to clog pores.
4. Apply a retinoid cream or gel (e.g., tretinoin) under the guidance of a dermatologist for gentle exfoliation and improved skin texture.
5. Consider chemical peels or laser therapy with a dermatologist’s guidance if you have larger or more numerous lesions.
6. Limit sun exposure and wear sunscreen daily to prevent further damage to your skin.
