Most of us suffer from acne from time to time and mostly from a type of acne is acne vulgaris. This can be mild to moderate and be treated with over the counter acne products. There are more severe forms of acne that are not so easy to treat and which have more severe symptoms.
Nodulecystic acne
The more severe form of acne vulgaris called Nodulecystic acne is a serious medical condition that mainly affects men, although women can get it.
This condition can led to permanent scaring and the symptoms are cysts, pustules and nodules that can cause infection. The nodules are fairly large lumps on the skin whereas the cysts and pustules are similar but filled with pus. The treatment for this type of severe acne iscortisone injections, antibiotics and sometimes a prescription of Isotretonoin.
Acne Conglobota
Another type of more unusual severe acne condition is linked to the body’s testosterone and androgen levels again mostly affecting men between 18 and 30 is called Acne Conglobota. The condition causes pus-filled lesions that form from pimples around numerous blackheads. Again the condition can led to permanent scaring.
It is thought that Acne Conglobota could be caused through misuse of anabolic steroids.
Isotretinoin is usually prescribed for this acne. If the large nodules are problematic these can be removed through surgery.
Acne Fulminians
Similar to Acne Conglobota is Acne Fulminians, whereby symptoms can appear for no apparent reason leaving permanent scaring. What is different about Acne Fulminians is the associated symptoms of aching joints and feverish pains.
Unfortunately Antibiotics do not help with this condition and you would need to consult a doctor who may prescribe a treatment of Isotretonoin.
Gram-Negative Folliculitis
This is an unpleasant and somewhat rare skin condition caused by excessive antibiotic use for common types of acne. Again the condition typically consists of painful pus filled lesions.
Gram Negative Folliculitis can be treated by Isotretinoin or by oral steroids.
Pyoderma Faciale (Rosacea Fulminans)
Rosacea Fulminans mostly affects women aged between 20 and 40 and consists of pustules and painful nodules which can leave permanent scarring. It can occur suddenly without any warning but fortunately does not usually last very long if it appears. The condition is fairly rare but if you are concerned can be treating by visiting a doctor who may prescribe Isotretinoin or a steroid treatment.
Treating Severe Ance
If you suspect you have severe acne then you may need to visit your doctor for advice. Many mild to moderate types of acne can be treated with an over the counter acne treatment so you may wish to try this first. A good quality acne product should improve your condition.
