Most people are not as concern with wrinkles on upper lip than those on the forehead, neck or near the eyes. While the wrinkles above lip are less obvious, they do suggest skin aging.
How do the wrinkles above lip come about? Just like it is on the face, these wrinkles appear when we aged. As we get wiser, our skin gets thinner and loses moisture and elasticity. But there are also external factors that accelerate the process like unprotected skin care particularly when we are outdoor, unhealthy food choices, lack of sleep and smoking. For wrinkles above lip, smoking plays a big part. But why?
It’s really easy to understand. Think about what happen when a person smokes. His lips puckered and the muscles around the lips contracted. Progressively, the muscles on the lips weaken and coupled with advancement in age, the lines show up.
But smoking causes more harm than just formation of wrinkles on upper lip. It also accelerates the formation of wrinkles on other part of the face too. This is because the nicotine and chemicals in the cigarette deprive the skin of moisture and nutrients making it vulnerable to wear and tear with minimal skin repair done by the body.
Here are a few tips for dealing with wrinkles on upper lip:
Quit Smoke: The most practical way is to stop the activity which causes more harm than good. If you enjoy the feeling of something dangling on the lip, choose something healthy like carrot stick.
Drink Directly from Cup: Avoid drinking from straw as the lip puckers just like what happen during smoking. Besides, it is also environmentally friendlier since you eliminate the use of straw.
Apply Lip Balm with SPF: 30 minutes before stepping out of the house, protect your lips with lip balm. Choose a lip balm with SPF 30 or more. It moisturizes and protects the lips to delay the formation of wrinkles on upper lip and lower lip as well.
Do Upper Lip Curl: A common exercise to prevent wrinkles on upper lip is an exercise call “Fish Pout”. Curl the upper lip and hold it in position with the index finger. Move the finger to the left, then right corner of the mouth. Do it 10 times per day to strengthen the upper lip muscles.
Consume Food Rich in Antioxidants: They prevent cellular damage and wrinkles formation. Some of the foods to consider are green tea, lemon, spinach, broccoli and cauliflower.
Lighten Lines with Lip Fixative: By plumping up lines with lip fixatives, it makes the wrinkles less noticeable as it minimizes makeup and lipstick seepage. This will make the wrinkles above lip less noticeable.
Proper Lips Care Regime: Lips care for wrinkles prevention is simpler than you think although often neglected. First, keep the lips clean. Remove food residues after meal and apply moisturizer to keep it hydrated. Drink plenty of water and spend a few minutes to massage it daily.
Also apply tretinoin cream or serum that contains glycolic acid to the upper lip. Tretinoin with glycolic acid accelerates skin cell turnover to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. However it is only available from dermatologist.
