"You Are What You Eat" – Does It Affect Your Skin? (Pimples And Spots)

Your parents will probably tell you to “eat your greens” and we never listened however, they could be right as new research about acne and the causes is suggesting that what we eat can show up on our skin.

For many years dermatologists, skin specialists and doctors have always said you can eat what you want, it will not affect your skin or your acne and this is because acne vulgaris is still not fully understood. Scientists still do not realise the reasons in which we get pimples, blackheads and spots on the skin. What scientists do know is that Hormones play a big role in acne and cause excess oil to become produced more often and faster.

How Acne Happens

Acne occurs when get blocked due to excess oil, dead skin cells or bacteria on the skin. The sebaceous glands underneath the skin routinely create oil and push it from under the skin upwards to push all bacteria and dead skins out of the skin. Acne happens when these holes(pores) get block with oil and dead skin cells which forms a sticky glue. This causes pimples and pustules.

There are different types of food that do different things once consumed inside the body and these foods have been put into a table called the Glycemic Index (GI). Foods with a high GI cause hormones in the body to work to create them into glucose. These hormone activity causes the skin to produce more oil. Lets see some of the High Glycemic Index (GI) foods.

  1. Parsnips, Potatoes and Broad Beans. These are vegetables with a High (GI) which means eating these could cause acne breakouts.
  2. Fish, but not Omega 6 fish as this is no good. Omega 3 which you probably heard before is good for the mind and the skin.
  3. Bananas, melons, pineapple, raisins are the worst fruit for High (GI)

By eating these you could find yourself with acne breakouts more than often and this can result in scarring unfortunately. Look after your skin, what you eat and your skin will look after you. “You are what you eat”

When growing from a child to a teenager, hormones are most active and these hormones cause acne pimples, boils(nodules) and pustules which can really disfigure confidence and self-esteem. But this can all be helped by eating the right diet and looking after skin.

In conclusion eating what you want is great, but eating better foods for you acne can stop acne from the roots so you can enjoy life once more. Simple avoiding the high (GI) foods you can laugh away acne within a couple of days.

Hope this helped
